VENETIAN BLINDS

A very popular choice of blind for the home or office, Venetian blinds allow a great level of control over the amount of light and privacy. Being versatile, cheap, and easy to use, Venetian blinds have become a number one stayer in the market.

Venetian blinds are popular home decorations. They are found in most homes and offices due to their affordability and sleek look. The use of venetian blinds provides a number of advantages to the user.

Privacy

Venetian blinds provide a very private environment. The opaque slats keep anyone from seeing through the blinds. However, looking at the slats in a certain angle may allow a person to see through.

Light Control

Venetian blinds allow you to control the amount of sunlight inside a room. Closing the gaps between the slats prevents the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays from entering the room. Venetian blinds with wider slats, when they are fully closed, will be able to block more light from entering. They can also be opened to let light enter if the room is too dark.

Design your room

Here are a number of venetian blind designs available. The designs will vary according to the material they are made from. Venetian blinds made from vinyl have lush textures and can be finished to resemble wood. Aluminum venetian blinds provide a metallic finish. Wood venetian blinds offer simplicity and elegance. Faux wood Foamwood or Ecowood venetian blinds look like wood but sold at a lower price, nevertheless they provide a rustic appeal.

Easy maintenance

Another advantage that venetian blinds offer is easy maintenance. The blinds can be cleaned by vacuuming the slats.

However, if you want a more thorough cleaning, then you may opt to clean the blinds by applying a mixture of water and ammonia on the slats. Allow the ammonia solution to rest on the blind for five minutes before you wipe it off with a damp piece of cloth.

Venetian blinds made from wood, however, are harder to clean but fairly easy to maintain. Wood Venetian blinds may be damaged with water, so never wipe the slats with a damp piece of cloth to clean it. With oiled Wood Venetians blinds, it is recommended that you apply wood polish on the slats once every two years.

Ease of installation and use

Venetian blinds are easy to install. Installing a Venetian blind usually involves nailing or screwing the mounting device of blind onto the window frame. This procedure can be done without the help of a professional. Venetian blinds come with a user-friendly manual that provides clear and simple instructions on how to install the blinds properly.

The blinds will be ready for use once they have been installed.

Affordable

Venetian blinds are very affordable, allowing you to save more money.  Venetian blinds made from vinyl are cheaper are usually cheaper than aluminium.  Wood Venetian blinds, however, may be more slightly more expensive. Faux wood Venetian blinds are good alternatives for wood blinds since they offer the user with the same aesthetic value as wood but purchased at a lower price.

Venetian blinds are diverse window decorations. These come in various colours and materials, providing you with a wider selection of designs that you can consider for your room. Venetian blinds can be used to add an accent to the design of a room or maintain a person’s privacy. Although, some people purchase Venetian blinds that offer both functionality and design.

Here are some recommended rooms for a Venetian blind.

Bedrooms

Venetian blinds are recommended for bedrooms. These blinds provide you with privacy and keep the sun out if ever you need to sleep in the middle of the day. The soothing designs of a venetian blind calm you down after a long day at work.

Rental Properties, Units, Apartments and Complexes

Venetian blinds are also recommended for rental apartments, units, apartments and complexes. This is because, depending on the type of venetian blind can be quite cheap.  Some of the wood types can be a little more expensive.  They are an extremely practical window covering.

Bathrooms

The bathroom is another ideal room for venetian blinds. Most venetian blinds have a high resistance against water and moisture, so they will not be damaged whenever they come in contact with water. The slats of these blinds are also thick enough to prevent anyone from seeing through. Venetian blinds are also hygienic since they are easy to clean, and they keep harmful bacteria from residing on the slats.

Not all venetian blinds, however, can be placed in the bathroom. Avoid using venetian blinds made with oiled wood since water may result on discolouration on the surface of the slats and also cause them to warp.  Lacquered timber  and timberlook venetian blinds are able to be placed in high moisture areas without a problem.

Kitchens

Venetian blinds are also ideal for kitchens. They can be placed on windows by your sink or countertops. Venetian blinds made from aluminum go well with modern kitchens since they would complement the stainless steel kitchen hardware. Vinyl venetian blinds go with any design and, with the right colour, can give the illusion that your kitchen is larger than it is. Faux wood venetian blinds are good alternatives for wood venetian blinds because they provide the elegance of wood but are not affected by moisture or humidity.

Living Rooms

Living rooms are another ideal area for venetian blinds. Venetian blinds keep the living room well lit when the slats are arranged with just enough spaces. To keep a smaller living room from feeling too crowded, use venetian blinds that do not take up too much space like a curtain would. Venetian blinds keep the living room well ventilated since they can be easily adjusted to let a breeze enter a room.

Offices

The organised mechanism and appearance of venetian blinds make them ideal for offices rather than the fancy and cluttered look of curtains. When the office looks spacious and well-trimmed, generally, employees would not be experiencing too much stress and instead become productive workers.

Information

Venetian blinds are composed mainly of slats. A slat is a long and narrow sheet that keeps light from entering the room. Slats are attached to cords and componentry that hold them firmly in one blind.

Slats for Venetian blinds come in different widths. The width of the slat determines the amount of slats that are needed to create one whole blind. Wider slats mean lesser number of slats to weave on a blind, and narrower slats would be greater in number in a blind. More than just the space the width of the blind accumulates, this can also alter both the look and functionality of the blind. Narrower slats tend to be more stylish rather than functional. On the other hand, wider slats are more effective in keeping the sun out.

25mm slat

Venetian blinds with 25mm wide slats offer a lighter look. The lines that the slats create also give the blind a geometric design. Although 25mm slats offer more aesthetic value, they lack in their functionality. Due to the number of gaps between each slat, these blinds do not block that much sunlight from entering the room.

50mm slat

These slats are wider and capable of blocking more sunlight. 50mm slats provide good functionality as well as good aesthetic value.

63mm slat

Some Venetian blinds can be composed of slats that are 63mm wide.  These are the widest types of slats for Venetian blinds that are available in the market. 63mm slats offer the best sun-blocking capability and allow you to see clearly through the blinds whenever they are opened. However, their great functionality leads them to a lack in design. The wide slats of these blinds are not as aesthetically pleasing as blinds with narrower slats.

What slat size should you choose

Given the number of width choices available, you might be confused on how wide the slats should be. A room with wide and large windows should have Venetian blinds with slats that are 50mm wide. These wide slats can efficiently keep light away from the room. A Venetian blind with slats that are 25mm wide is ideal for smaller rooms and windows with smaller frames. The narrow slats will enhance the appeal of the room, and the numerous lines that the slats create can make the room larger than it is.

Purchasing venetian blinds can be very confusing, especially if the consumer is not knowledgeable about what can be a durable type. Knowing what materials venetian blind can be made of, such as metal, wood, or vinyl can help immensely. Here are some things that you should be aware of when buying venetian blinds.

Slat width

Venetian blinds come with various slat widths. Slats are thin sheets in the blinds that block the rays of sun from entering the room. They would typically come in certain measurements ranging from 25mm to 63mm wide. The width of the blind determines the amount of sunlight it can block. Wider slats are more efficient in preventing light. However, thinner slats provide more aesthetic value.

Materials

Venetian blinds are made from various materials. These materials have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Aluminum

The aluminium blind is very durable and easy to maintain. Aluminum venetian blinds are not affected by the humidity of the room, making them very versatile and compatible with any room. Aluminum venetian blinds come in various finishes ranging from neutral to metallic tones.

The durability of an aluminum blind is determined by the thickness or gauge of the slat. Aluminum blinds come in three different thicknesses or gauges which are six, eight, or nine-gauge. Aluminum venetian blinds are prone to folding. Improper lifting and turning of the slats can cause the slats to fold.

Vinyl

Vinyl blinds come in a wide range of designs and colours ranging from embossed designs to neutral or wooden tones. These blinds are very stylish, durable, and have a high resistance against water. These blinds are also easy to maintain. Wiping the slats with a damp piece of cloth is enough as a cleaning method.

The problem with these blinds is that they do not insulate heat well. You may need to purchase a type with darker colours if you want to increase these blinds’ heat insulating property.

Wood

Wooden venetian blinds are made from various types of wood such as ash. Most wood venetian blinds, however, are made from either basswood and rasin. These can be purchased with various finishes and varnishes. The numerous choices of materials and finishes allow the user to experiment and arrive with a unique and personal look for the blind. The slats of a wood blind are lightweight, preventing the middle part of a long slat from bending or bowing. These blinds are also great heat insulators, capable of keeping heat away from inside the room during a sunny day. In cold nights, when the slats are fully closed, these blinds can provide a source of heat as they protect the wind from going through your windows.

Wood venetian blinds have two disadvantages. First, these blinds cannot be placed in very humid areas. They are not also to be placed in rooms that have high concentrations of moisture. This is because water can cause the surface of the slat to warp and fade.

Faux Wood

A good alternative for wood blinds are venetian blinds made from faux wood.  This type of wood is made from vinyl or a mixture of wood and vinyl. Faux wood venetian blinds offer the same look as wood blinds but are sold at a lower cost. Compared to a wooden blind, one made of faux wood can withstand moisture and water due to the vinyl components added to it. The only drawback is that they do not insulate heat as well as a wooden blind.

VERTICAL BLINDS

Vertical blinds are a very practical and affordable window blind. As its name suggests, vertical blinds slide vertically, making them ideal for larger windows and patio doors.

Vertical blinds are very versatile. They serve a wide range of purposes, both aesthetic and practical, and can be used in virtually any room. Vertical blinds are commonly used in corporate rooms with large windows, but they work just as well in homes and small commercial establishments like cafes, studios, or shops. Below are some of the most common benefits of vertical blinds.

Shade your room

Like most other blinds, vertical blinds are primarily designed to provide shade to a room and reduce glare from the sun. Vertical blinds perform this function better than horizontal blinds, because they have wider slats to block out more sunlight. Also, since vertical blinds are commonly used for large areas, they have greater filtering capacities than other blinds. Light that gets into your room is filtered by the slats and released in a soft, comfortable glow rather than harsh rays.

Protect your equipment

Full-length windows and glass walls are very attractive, but they are not the safest choice, especially in crowded commercial areas and busy streets. Rocks, twigs, and other heavy projectiles can crash through your window and hit your furniture or electronic equipment, causing a lot of damage and risking fires or injury. While they cannot protect your window from the impact, vertical blinds can block flying objects and keep them from doing any further damage.

Keep your privacy

Another problem with full-length windows and glass walls is that they leave your room visible to passersby. Many people find it hard to work in such an environment, and it can be distracting to see people or cars passing by as you work. Also, a glass wall easily tells thieves, whenever you are away, that your house or office is safe to break into. Vertical blinds cover your window or wall and shield your place from public view, while still letting in enough light to illuminate the room.

Divide large rooms

Large offices often use vertical blinds as makeshift walls to divide the room into sections or cubicles. Vertical blinds can be fixed onto a permanent or movable frame, turning them into dividers. This is very convenient for small, growing offices because they can easily add sections to an office without having to construct individual walls.

Decorate your space

Vertical blinds can also be used as decorative accents while serving other practical purposes. Depending on the colour and design, vertical blinds can give your home a sleek, modern look, lend a professional aura to your private office, or create a warm, welcoming mood to a shop or cafe. Some people even use vertical blinds purely for decorative purposes, such as to add texture to a plain wall or frame a door entrance.

Vertical blinds are commonly used to cover large areas, such as wide windows and walls, and are often associated with offices and conference rooms. But they have grown more popular over the years, and people have found other uses for them outside the corporate world. Today, vertical blinds are used in homes, shops, restaurants, studios, and many other commercial establishments. Read on to find out what rooms will benefit the most from vertical blinds.

Rooms with large windows

Many people opt for large windows because they give the room a fresh, airy ambience and provide a great outdoor view. When the sun gets too bright, however, large windows can be a problem. Curtains can block out sunlight well enough, but they tend to make the room too dark. Vertical blinds allow you to control the amount of sunlight that enters your room and direct the light exactly where you want it.

Rooms with glass walls

Glass walls look very modern and attractive, but they compromise a great deal of safety and protection. Rocks, twigs, debris, and other flying objects can break through a glass wall and hit furniture or appliances inside the room. Vertical blinds can help limit the damage to your wall and keep the projectile from causing further damage inside. They also filter the sunlight that enters your room, which opens a lot of creative ideas. Choose a colour that matches your room decor to create a natural tinted glow, or direct the light towards an interesting painting or sculpture to draw attention.

Rooms with sliding glass doors

Sliding glass doors leave a room open to public view, depriving you of privacy and possibly distracting you from your work. Place a set of vertical blinds over a glass door to keep your office private while allowing you to see outside. You can also pull the blinds back anytime you need to, or change the colour to suit your tastes.

Bedrooms

For bedrooms with large, full-size windows, vertical blinds are a great alternative to pull-back curtains. Vertical blinds allow you to let the sunlight in gradually in the mornings instead of irritating your eyes with a burst of harsh light. They also work well for smaller bedroom windows, because they can be pulled back in two directions just like regular curtains. Windows overlooking a study or work area can be fitted with small vertical blinds to regulate the light for working in the daytime.

Offices

Vertical blinds are widely popular in office and commercial buildings. Their sleek, straight lines lend a professional look to any office while performing the basic functions of shading and protection. Their uses are not limited to windows – you can use vertical blinds as wall accents or mount them onto a tall frame to create a makeshift room divider.

Vertical blinds are primarily used to shade and protect large windows, but over the years, they have grown in popularity and people have found a host of other uses for them. Vertical blinds can serve as window covers, room dividers, or purely decorative accents. Whether you need window treatments for your home, office, or commercial building, vertical blinds are always a great and convenient choice.

However, buying vertical blinds takes a bit more thought than it seems. You have to choose the right size, colour, weight, and thickness, to name a few. Wrong vertical blinds can be more of a burden than a complement to your room. Below are some of the things you need to consider to help you choose the right vertical blinds.

Width

Vertical blinds are generally wider than horizontal blinds. Widths vary between 89mm, 100mm & 127mm, although 127mm slats are used in most store-bought blinds. Choose a reasonable width for your blind slats – they must be proportional to the length and size of the window. Narrower slats give you more control over lighting and shade.

Length

Your vertical blinds must cover the entire length of your window or wall. Avoid vertical blinds that leave even a few centimetres exposed, because unfiltered sunlight can get in through the gap. Likewise, avoid oversized blinds – they carry a lot of unnecessary weight and require more maintenance.

Colour

Choosing a colour for your blinds requires more effort than matching it with the rest of the room. Some colours filter out more light than others. Consider the amount of sunlight you usually get in your area – if your room faces direct sunlight, you may need darker shades to tone down the light. If you get mostly soft sunlight, light shades are your best choice.

Material

Vertical blinds can be made of vinyl, aluminum or wood. Your choice of material should depend on the level of sunlight filtering you need from your blinds. Aluminum and wooden blinds are almost completely opaque, while vinyl ones let in a good amount of filtered light. Keep durability in mind as well. Make sure the slats are fairly thick and rigid, the rails are straight, and that each slat is securely connected to the rail.

Safety

Although vertical blinds are generally safe, there have been reports of small animals such as kittens getting strangled on the pull cords of common blinds. To prevent such accidents, choose blinds with pull cords hanging a safe distance from the floor. Some models have snaps on the curve of the cord that break apart under stress, so that animals that get caught can safely drop to the floor. An even safer alternative is the control rod, which is solid and leaves no room for accidents.

WOOD BLINDS

Wood blinds are the perfect choice for any stylish home. The natural look of wood can give any room a feeling of warmth and comfort. There are many options available for wood blinds so please make sure to read about them here before buying. Wood blinds are a popular type of blinds that can come in different shapes and designs. The use of wooden blinds has been done for centuries and is considered as the original design for window blinds. Wood blinds provide the user with great aesthetic value and are also very functional. Though they may be very expensive, their popularity as a home decoration has not deteriorated. However, purchasing wood blinds may be a confusing task, especially if you are not familiar with the intricacies of blinds like their makeup, design or maintenance mechanisms.

Materials

Wood blinds are made from different types of wood. Most wood blinds, however, are commonly made from ramin and basswood. Basswood is a very durable and a light type of wood that comes from America. However, basswood is very expensive. Ramin, on the other hand, is a combination of different types of wood, one of these is ash, and usually comes from the Indochina. Ramin is not as durable as basswood but is cheaper.

Design

Wood blinds come in two designs: traditional and woven. Traditional wood blinds are composed of slats that are threaded together by wires. A wire and rotating mechanism allows the user to turn a blind’s slats up to 170 degrees. Woven wooden blinds are made from thin strips of wood, such as bamboo, which are woven into one flat sheet. Traditional wood blinds are more popular than woven blinds due to their price and functionality. Woven blinds, however, provide more aesthetic value.

The look for the blind depends on its finish. The blind can be given a light tone, which gives the wood a more natural finish. A deeper and darker tone makes a blind resemble the colour of mahogany for instance. A darker shade of blind will serve its purpose, perhaps if the room appears to be too minimalist.

The wide range of materials and finishes allows you to experiment with the look of your blind. You will be able to mix and match various woods and finishes but you are sure to arrive at a design that is genuine and personal.

Area of Installation

Wooden blinds should not be placed in areas with high moisture contents. This can lead to discolouration and warping of the wood. Ideal areas of installation are places that have stable temperatures and controlled humidity.

Maintenance

Wood blinds are easy to clean, but may require lots of attention for maintenance. Wooden blinds should not be cleaned with water for it can cause further damage. Dusting and vacuuming should instead be done to clean the blind. You may also opt to use a mild wood polish solution, which is composed of small amounts of water and wood polish. Polishing should be done once every two years to maintain the brightness and colour of the blind. The type of wood polish you use should have the same shade as your blind to prevent any discolouration.

Wood blinds are popular home decors. They come in various colour shades and designs. Wood blinds are made from various types of wood, but most of the time they are made from basswood or rasin. Wood blinds can have various finishes or varnishes for more accent and can be used to enhance any type of room design.

However, there are a few places not meant for wood blinds. These types of blinds should not be placed in rooms which accumulate a lot of moisture because the slats made of wood can easily crack and warp under such condition. Here are some recommended rooms wherein you can place wood blinds.

Bedroom

Wood blinds are ideal in bedrooms, especially those that have a rustic theme. Another reason why wood blinds are recommended for the bedroom is that they can block large amounts of light from entering the room. This will keep your room well covered from harmful rays of sunlight and will allow you to rest properly even in the middle of the day. Bedrooms are usually placed with horizontal wooden blinds since the windows in these rooms are not that big compared to larger rooms at home, such as the living room.

Living Room

The living room is another ideal area for a wooden blind. Wooden blinds can provide your living room with a more elegant look. Wooden blinds are good heat insulators that can keep your living room cool during a sunny day, and warm during a cold night. If your living room has long and wide windows, it is recommended that you purchase vertical wooden blinds. This is because they have wider slats which block more amounts of sunlight. They also provide you with a larger field of view between their slats to provide you with a better view outside when you need to know what is happening in your neighbourhood.

Dining Room

Another ideal area for wooden blinds is the dining room, especially for dining rooms that have wooden table sets. This is because they are able to provide more accents and enhance the theme of the room further. Choose wooden blinds that have the same or slightly different colour shade from your table set.

Places to avoid

Always remember that wooden blinds should not be placed in areas with high moisture content. Excessive moisture can cause discolouration on the surface and warping of the wooden slats. Examples of these areas are kitchens and bathrooms.

Wood blinds are a popular choice among home owners for these provide a warm and natural feel to a home. The wood makeup provides that natural appeal and the colours and designs integrated to a wood blind make it soothing to the mainstays and visitors at home. Besides being an effective shade for homes, wood blinds provide you with more advantages for they are made of very diverse materials.

Shade

Wood blinds are very effective shades since they can keep excess light from entering a room. They can be easily adjusted to fix the amount of the entering sunlight and keep a room within normal temperature. Wood blinds can be totally closed by adjusting the distance of the slats to make a room very dark.

Installation

Installing wood blinds is easy. Most of the time, these sets come with a user-friendly manual which presents you with clear and easy-to-understand installation procedures. You can do the process yourself. However, you may opt to hire a professional if you want to make sure that the blinds are well placed onto your windows.

Heat Insulators

Wood blinds are known to be good heat insulators. This makes them a good decor for humid areas since they keep a room cool even if they let sunlight in. When it is a cold night and there should be no wind entering your room, these blinds can be closed fully by adjusting them either by lifting a cord that controls the spaces between slats.

Weight

Wood blinds can be very lightweight and long. These types are intended to cover large windows. The lightness of the material can be a problem because it would make the blinds fly out of place especially by strong winds. To solve that problem, blinds are weighted at the edges. Applying weight on the blinds can also make the middle-portioned slats from bending or cracking.

Durability

Wood blinds are known to be very durable. Their hard and firm slats have a lower chance of cracking or breaking. The slats are usually made from 25mm – 63mm of either rasin or bass wood, which are very sturdy types of wood. The thicker the slats the more tough and rigid they will be.

Design

Wood blinds come in different colours and designs hence there is a wide range of choices in the market. Like any other furniture, blinds can be custom-built. Such option will allow you to create a unique and more personal design. Experiment with various types of wood, varnishes, and finishes so you can satisfy your taste before placing that wood blind up on your window.

Maintenance

Wood blinds are easy to maintain. Dust can be removed through wiping a small piece of wet cloth on the slats’ surface. For a more efficient cleaning, dilute a small amount of wood cleaner or wood polish in water. Wet a towel or any piece of cloth with the solution and then wipe it on the blind.

The slats are the main component for traditional wooden blinds. The slats are thin sheets of wood which keep light from entering a room. Wires or straps are used to connect each slat. These wires or straps are connected to a rotor, located on the mounting device of the blind. These rotors turn or lift the slats and dictate the distances or spaces between them. The spaces control the amount of sunlight passing through your room.

The slats of wooden blinds come in various widths, which alter the overall appearance of the blind. The wider the slats the fewer would be their number in an entire blind.

25mm

25mm wooden blinds are the cheapest types of wooden blinds in the market, nevertheless they serve their purpose of shading your windows or making them attractive spots in your home. The problem, however, is that blinds with 25mm slats provide larger stacking space when they are raised due to the large number of slats they have. In addition, wood blinds with such size of slats do not give ample viewing space of what is happening outside of your home.

50mm

50mm slat wooden blinds provide the blind with a distinct look called the “shutter effect.” Wood blinds with 50mm slats also provide a moderate field of view since the gap between each slat is larger than a wood blind with 25mm slats.

63mm

63mm wood blinds are the widest types of slats used for horizontal wood blinds. They offer better fields of view than the previous two due to the wide gaps between each slat. Wood blinds with 63mm slats are composed of fewer slats. They can effectively block light from entering a room because of their large frame.

89mm

89mm wooden blinds are used for vertical wooden blinds. They offer the best field of view since due to the wide space between their slats. The wider frames of these slats allow them to prevent the most amount of sunlight from entering a room.

What slat size should you choose

Choose blinds with wooden slats that that can provide enough coverage for your type of window. Blinds with 25mm slats are the narrowest and can be used for smaller windows. Wood blinds with 50mm slats can be used for windows of moderate size. Finally, wood blinds with 63mm and 89mm slats should be used in larger and wider windows to prevent large amounts of light from passing through your room.

MINI BLINDS

Mini blinds are cheaper than other types of blinds, and come in a great range of styles and colour. In fact, a high-end mini blind is just in the same price range as a standard horizontal blind sold in the market.

Mini blinds are inexpensive and popular types of blinds. They come in different sizes and designs. These are used to control the amount and direction of light and provide a small degree of heat insulation in home or workplace. Some mini blinds allow you to adjust the slats to let a breeze or sunlight flow into the room.

Slat width

Mini blinds are available in various slat widths. Most mini blinds, however, usually have slat widths of 15mm, 25mm and 50mm. Mini blinds with smaller slat sizes are more stylish and add more texture. Larger slat sizes, on the other hand, are more effective in blocking the rays of the sun and offer more privacy.

Materials
Aluminum

Aluminum mini blinds are the most inexpensive type of mini blinds. They are durable and easy to maintain. They can be placed in any room type since humidity does not affect the structural integrity of the blind.

The thickness of the aluminum slat determines the durability of the blind. Aluminum blinds are available in six, eight, or nine-gauge aluminum slats. As the gauge of an aluminum slat increases, the more durable it will be.

Vinyl

Vinyl mini blinds come with a wider range of designs ranging from embossed prints to wood tones. They are very durable, stylish, and not affected by the humidity of an area. Vinyl blinds are very easy to maintain. They can be washed with soap and water without being damaged. They can effectively block and reflect sunlight. Vinyl blinds, however, are not good heat insulators. Finding a vinyl blind with darker colours may improve its heat insulation.

Wood

Mini blinds can be made from various types of wood and can be varied according to finish and varnish. Basswood and rasin are the common materials to use. A wide range of wood materials, finishes, and varnishes are available through enterprising manufacturers. Wood mini blinds are lightweight and can even compare to vinyl types in terms of weight.

Wood mini blinds, however, cannot be placed in areas with high contents of moisture. Water causes discolouration and warping of the wood. Furthermore, wood mini blinds are very expensive.

Faux Wood

Faux wood mini blinds are affordable alternatives for wooden mini blinds.  The advantage of faux wood mini blinds is that they have a higher resistance against moisture due to the addition of vinyl components.

Mini blinds are versatile home decorations. They can be placed in any type of room without altering the room’s design or theme. Most mini blinds are water resistant so they will not be damaged nor deteriorate whenever they come in contact with water. Wooden mini blinds, however, should not be placed in the bathroom since water can cause discolouration on the surface of the slats and also cause the wood to warp. A mini blind made from faux wood are good alternatives for wood mini blinds inside the bathroom.

Kitchens

Kitchens are ideal areas for mini blinds. These blinds can be placed on the windows by your sink. However, avoid using wooden mini blinds in these areas since the steam from cooking may cause water to condense on the surface of the blinds and damage the slats. Place mini blinds made from faux wood if you want to attain the elegant look wood provides without the worries of discolourations and warping.

Rooms with small windows

Mini blinds go well with rooms that have small windows. The small size of these types of blinds provides a good fit for small windows.  Standard blinds may be too big and impractical for a small window.

Living rooms

Mini blinds can also be placed in living rooms. A set of mini blinds can be placed in living rooms with wide windows to make them as focal points of the living room and at the same time, control the amount of unnecessary light that will pass through inside.

Mini blinds are used to control the amount and direction of light and provide a small degree of heat insulation. Some of these types of blinds allow you to adjust the slats to let a breeze flow into the room. Mini blinds are becoming a popular choice for home decoration nowadays due to the number of advantages they provide. For one, they are inexpensive compared to other types. Another thing is that they can come in different sizes and designs.

Offer Privacy

Mini blinds are able to provide you with a private environment when they are fully closed. Furthermore, opaque blind slats are available. These types prevent anyone from seeing through your room or office. There is a small possibility, however, for passersby to sneak peek on what you are doing in your home if the gaps between slats are opened.

Light Control

Mini blinds are able to control the amount of light that enters a room. Sunlight is necessary but only for a specific time in a day, normally between 6am-9am. During the rest of the day, chances are you will only get the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun, which may damage your furniture, artwork, and your skin. This is the reason why any home should make use of mini blinds—for covering windows where unnecessary light will get in.

Design your room

Mini blinds come in different designs and provide more aesthetic value to a room. These designs differ according to the materials they are made from. An aluminum makeup creates a bright and metallic look for your mini blind. Wood blinds offer a more elegant and sophisticated look. Vinyl mini blinds have rich textures, elegant neutral colours, and also have wood tones. Faux wood offers the natural look of a wooden blind, and at a lower price.

Easy to maintain

Mini blinds are very easy to maintain. However, they need to be handled carefully whenever they need to be cleaned. Before washing these blinds, you need to vacuum them first and remove excess dust. Only when you have finished vacuuming can you remove the blinds from their mount and prepare them for a wet wash. Except those made from wood, mini blinds can be cleaned with a mixture of water and ammonia. Apply this mixture on both sides of the blind gently. Leave the mixture five minutes and then you can wash the mixture away from the blinds with water.

Ease of installation and use

Mini blinds are very easy to install. Screws or nails are used to attach them onto a wall. Installation can be done without the help of a professional, but you may opt to hire one if you want make sure that the whole process goes well. With the lightweight materials used for mini blinds, mounting them will not be a major trouble even if you are not a seasoned carpenter.

Affordable

Mini blinds are cheaper than other types of blinds, which can be made of other materials and have different size or colour. In fact, a high-end mini blind is just in the same price range as a standard horizontal blind sold in the market.

Slats are a thin sheet of either wood, aluminum, vinyl, or faux wood. These slats are the main parts of a mini blind. They are the ones that keep light from entering a room because they serve as curtains of windows. But blinds are more flexible compared to a curtain because they can be adjusted many ways. Slats are connected to each other by cables or wires in a blind. The wires are attached to a gear placed in a long bar of a blind. A rotating wheel or a pulley is used to to adjust the position of the slats.

Slats come with different widths that can affect the appearance and functionality of the blind. Read on for what the sizes of slats can do to to better serve their purposes.

15mm

Mini blinds are the smallest types of slats available for mini blinds. These slats cannot block enough light from entering due to the number of gaps placed between each slat. Naturally, when there are many slats in a blind, the more they have spaces in between giving light from outside to pass through more often. The numerous gaps between each slat may also decrease your privacy. Another drawback of these slats is that they do not provide a good field of view whenever the slats are opened. The gaps between each slat may be too narrow to see through properly.

25mm

25mm slats make the blinds block more light than a mini blind with slats just 15mm wide. With 25mm wide slats, a mini blind can offer a wider scope of viewing for someone who would look through the slat spaces. Slats of 25mm width can be more aesthetic to look at and have a better chance of blocking the sun’s rays.

50mm

Some mini blinds come with slats that measure 50mm. Compared to the previous types, these slats prevent more sunlight from entering a room. These slats are also able to provide more privacy than the other two slats.

63mm

Mini blinds rarely have slats that are this wide. This is because these slats are too wide for a mini blind. These blinds, however, are wide enough to block the most amount of sunlight. These slats also offer a very private environment, but there is still a small chance that an outsider will be able to see through the blind. These blinds offer the best field of view due to the wide spaces between each slat.

BAMBOO BLINDS

The natural look of bamboo blinds will suit almost any home setting, making your home feel casual and inviting. Bamboo blinds also very affordable, and are a great alternative to other slat blinds or drapes. Although they may look fragile, bamboo blinds are very durable.

Bamboo blinds are great of you want to be able to filter light without completely blocking it off. They come in different sizes, stains, and folding styles. Which type is best for you? Here are some tips to help you decide.

Choose from two folding styles

Bamboo blinds have folding patterns that are very different from the more common Venetian blinds. One type of bamboo blinds – sometimes called woven bamboo shades – rolls up and down around a dowel. You simply roll it up to let light pass through, and roll it down to let light in. The other type of bamboo blinds folds Roman style. The slats can be rotated to a desired angle to filter and control the direction of light, completely raised (accordion style) to let all light in, or completely shut to block out light.

What size to get

The size of your bamboo blinds will depend entirely on whether you want your blinds to hand inside your window frame (very popular in modern homes) or outside your window frame (best if you want to achieve a look similar to curtains).

If you want your bamboo blinds to hang inset, you need to measurement the inside of your window frame very precisely – from left to right, and then from top to bottom. Also measure your window frame’s depth – you may need this to decide what slat width to use. There are a lot of ready-made bamboo blinds to fit standard windows, but you may have to order special sizes if your windows are smaller or bigger than average.

If you want your bamboo blinds to hang outset, simply measure from the point you intend to hang the bamboo shade to the point where you intend for it to drop. Experts advise that you throw in 50mm to allow for the mounting brackets. After determining the length that you want, measure from side to side to the width you want. You can either go to the store and get the bamboo slats with dimensions closest to your measurements, or have one measured and cut precisely according to your measurements.

If you want to spruce up your bamboo blinds, why don’t you use valances and window scarves?

Some types of window valances can go well with bamboo blinds. It can be bundled, gathered, swagged, or pleated directly atop your blinds. Choose a texture that complements your bamboo blinds’ stain.

If you do not want to invest in window valances, try window scarves instead. Soften your blinds’ hard edges by draping a soft scarf over it.

Bedroom

Bamboo blinds are ideal in bedrooms, especially those that have a rustic theme.

Bamboo blinds are good heat insulators that can keep your living room cool during a sunny day, and warm during a cold night. If your living room has long and wide windows, it is recommended that you purchase vertical wooden blinds. This is because they have wider slats which block more amounts of sunlight. They also provide you with a larger field of view between their slats to provide you with a better view outside when you need to know what is happening in your neighborhood.

Dining Room

Another ideal area for bamboo blinds is the dining room, especially for dining rooms that have wooden table sets. This is because they are able to provide more accents and enhance the theme of the room further. Choose bamboo blinds that have the same or slightly different colour shade from your table set.

Places to avoid

Always remember that bamboo blinds should not be placed in areas with high moisture content. Excessive moisture can cause discolouration on the surface and warping of the wooden slats. Examples of these areas are kitchens and bathrooms. Steam from cooking can cause water to evaporate on the surface of the blind and lead it to warp.  Bamboo blinds in bathrooms have a high potential of getting wet.

Bamboo blinds, literally made from bamboo materials, are becoming a popular type of home decoration today because most people are looking to its benefits such as being environment-friendly and stylish. The use of bamboo blinds is not something new, it has been done for decades in eastern countries such as Japan.

Bamboo blinds offer you a number of advantages. They are affordable, attractive, and a durable decoration for homes.

Affordable

High-end bamboo blinds are relatively cheap compared with other high-end blinds. In fact, most high-end bamboo blinds have the same price range as standard venetian blinds.

Installation

Bamboo blinds are easy to install. Screws or nails are used to hang the blind onto a window frame. Most bamboo blinds come with simple and easy-to-understand manuals that provide step-by-step instructions of how to install the blind. You can also opt to hire a professional if you want to make sure that your blind is installed properly. Bamboo blinds can be easily cut to fit any window size.

Durability

Bamboo blinds are made mainly from bamboo, a very flexible and durable tree. The flexibility of a bamboo blind prevents it from cracking due to strong gusts of wind or other external factors. Slats for a blind are boiled, dried, and threaded carefully to increase their flexibility. Bamboo blinds do not expand or shrink as much as a normal hardwood. This reduces the chances of cracking during frequent exposure to alternating cold and hot weather.

Design

Bamboo blinds can provide your home with a more natural yet attractive design. The blinds themselves have a rustic yet elegant look and can go with almost any room design. Bamboo blinds come in a wide range of colours and finishes providing you with a wider range of designs to choose from. Aside from its design and colour, proper lighting in your room can also enhance the overall look of a bamboo blind.

Maintenance

Bamboo blinds are easy to maintain. A damp piece of cloth can be used to easily wipe away dust and grime from the surface of the blind. You can also opt to clean the blind with a wood cleaning solution which is created by mixing a small amount of wood cleaner with water. Cleaning should be done at least twice a month.

Versatility

The natural appearance of a bamboo blind makes them very versatile. Bamboo blinds can be placed in any room without affecting the room’s overall theme. They also blend well with any type of furniture. Bamboo slats are thin bamboo sheets that are piled, layered, and threaded together to make bamboo blinds. They are particularly effective in keeping unwanted rays of the sun from entering a room. Slats for bamboo blinds come in various widths. The wider the slats, the fewer of them are needed.

Choose a bamboo slat width according to your requirements. As a general rule, you should go for smaller bamboo slats if you have smaller windows, and wider ones if your windows are bigger. This is not an absolute rule, though – it is usually better to choose the width of your slats based on how you intend to use your bamboo blinds and your budget. Here are some ideas to help you:

Bamboo slats that are less than an 25mm wide

Unlike traditional bamboo blinds, bamboo blinds with slats that measure usually 2.5 mm up to 7.5 mm are not as flexible – that is, these slats cannot be rotated 170 degrees to hide the light coming in. And while these narrow slats allow light to pass between them, they still need to be pulled up altogether to allow users to see outside the window (or door) clearly.

Despite their obvious disadvantage, though, narrow bamboo slats are still bestsellers because of their beauty, unique design, and their price tag. Bamboo blinds with narrow slats are generally cheaper than bamboo blinds with wider slats.  A wire or cord links each slat together.

27mm bamboo slats

25mm is the ‘conventional’ size for bamboo slats because this width makes them a lot more versatile and functional. 25mm bamboo slats are wide enough not to fold or ‘roll up’ whenever they are lifted. They can be rotated170 degrees to block the light coming in (or enhance privacy), and do not need to be fully raised to give the user a clear view of the other side of the window or door. Still, 25mm bamboo slats do not offer a very good field of view since the slat spaces between them are still too narrow.

50mm bamboo slats

These slats look ‘chunky’ and are usually best for bigger windows or doors. Like the 27mm bamboo slats, they are versatile and functional. They can be rotated170 degrees to block the light coming in (or enhance privacy), and do not need to be fully raised to give the user a clear view of the other side of the window or door. The spaces between slats of this size are wider than those of one-inch slats, so they let the user see out the window or door better. The downside: they can let outsiders see in and compromise privacy if rotated the wrong way.
Still can’t decide?

If you still do not know which slats are best for you, maybe you should go for woven bamboo blinds instead. Bamboo materials are woven together with strings or yarns to form almost opaque blinds that you can either roll or fold up or down. Woven bamboo blinds are not only cheaper than bamboo shutters – they provide ultimate privacy as well.
